Robert Heinecken

An exhibition of more than sixty extraordinary photographs at The Met Fifth Ave includes masterpieces by Paul Strand, Dora Maar, Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, Edward Weston, Walker Evans, and other leading artists.

Robert Heinecken (1931–2006) was a pioneer in the postwar Los Angeles art scene. Describing himself as a “para-photographer,” because his work stood “beside” or “beyond” traditional ideas associated with photography, Heinecken worked across multiple mediums, including photography, sculpture, video, printmaking, and collage.

The Museum of Modern Art, New York's 2014 exhibition was the first retrospective of the groundbreaking work of Robert Heinecken since the artist's death in 2006.

In the ’70s and ’80s, Robert Heinecken used found imagery to explore themes that still feel urgent today, like the profusion of advertising messages in our lives and the manufacturing of news authorities.
