“Ecstatic Time: The Alchemy of Photography” at Phoenix Art Museum

Work by Abelardo Morell included

July 29, 2026 – January 3, 2027 | Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, Arizona

The exhibition explores the transformative nature of camera vision, presenting photography as both rooted in the material world and capable of reshaping perception in unexpected ways. Framed as a “love letter” to the medium, it brings together works spanning the history of photography and emphasizes experimentation, visual alchemy, and the capacity of images to produce wonder and discovery. Work by Abelardo Morell is included, with Morell’s camera obscura image from Lacock Abbey featured in the opening section, Awake and Dreaming, and Open Dictionary (2001) presented among a group of still lifes that highlight photography’s ability to amplify and defamiliarize everyday objects. Drawn from the collection of the Center for Creative Photography, the exhibition is co-organized with the Phoenix Art Museum and curated by Emilia Mickevicius, marking the 20-year anniversary of the institutions’ partnership.
