Coming into Focus: A Snapshot of Photography at the Nasher is on view at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, presenting a wide-ranging survey of the museum’s historic and contemporary photographic holdings. The exhibition brings together seminal photographers from across generations — including Harry Callahan, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, André Kertész, Danny Lyon, Abelardo Morell, Joel Meyerowitz, and Laurie Simmons — alongside other influential voices represented in the Nasher’s expanding collection.

Tracing the evolution of photographic practice from early processes to modern and contemporary experimentation, Coming into Focus highlights shifts in technique, subject matter, and visual language over nearly two centuries. The show underscores the museum’s growing commitment to photography, bolstered by major recent gifts that have more than doubled its holdings.

Organized to draw out both thematic and formal connections across time, the exhibition reflects on how photographers have responded to changing artistic currents, technological developments, and cultural contexts. Curated by Ellen C. Raimond and Marshall N. Price, the presentation celebrates the enduring power of photography to shape perception, memory, and narrative.
