Gregory Crewdson

Biography

Gregory Crewdson is internationally recognized for his large-scale, meticulously staged photographs. Working in familiar American settings, his cinematic images capture moments of psychological intensity beneath the surface of everyday life.

Crewdson’s practice is distinguished by its collaborative, film-like production process. Working with crews that often include set designers, lighting technicians, and actors, he constructs carefully choreographed environments that blur the boundaries between photography, theater, and film. The resulting photographs are defined by precise composition, controlled lighting, and a sustained sense of emotional suspension.

Crewdson has produced several landmark bodies of work, including Twilight, Beneath the Roses, Cathedral of the Pines, and An Eclipse of Moths. His work is held in major museum collections worldwide, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Tate Modern, London.
