Ilse Bing Retrospective at Fundación MAPFRE

23 September 2022 - 8 January 2023

Fundación MAPFRE presents the most comprehensive retrospective to date in Spain of photographer Ilse Bing  (Frankfurt, 1899–New York, 1998). Produced by Fundación MAPFRE and curated by Juan Vicente Aliaga, Associate Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de València, the exhibit offers a complete survey of this artist’s photographic oeuvre, from 1929 to the 1950s.

Bing’s work cannot be ascribed to any of the movements or tendencies that influenced her. She worked in almost all the artistic genres, from architectural photography to portraiture, self-portraits, images of everyday objects and landscapes. The diversity of styles which she employed reflect her significant and notably individual interpretation of the different cultural trends that she assimilated, from the German Bauhaus and New Objectivity to Parisian Surrealism and the ceaseless dynamism of New York.

The exhibition, which includes 190 photographs in addition to documentary material, is organized into ten sections which together offer a chronological and thematic survey of Bing’s career.
